Adoption has become a subject very near and dear to our hearts. Since coming home with our sweet Lily Mei, so many people have said "she is so lucky to have you". Oh no, my friend, we are the lucky ones!!
Here are a few suggestions on how you can support adoption:
1. If you have ever considered adoption, please research, read, talk to other adoptive parents, send for information packets, pray and pray and pray and then....DO IT!! There is no greater reward on this earth! Here are a few excellent agencies: Children of the World, Children's Hope International, Lifeline, Bethany, CCAI. There are many more. When you send for their information packets, they usually include a list of adoptive parents that have used them. Email them. Let them share their story. You will never regret it.
2. If adoption isn't in your plan, please consider giving to an adoption charity. Here are a few: Love Without Boundaries , Shoahannah's Hope, Half the Sky, Our Chinese Daughter's Foundation. Again, there are many more. These just happen to be the ones I am more familiar with. Several families who have adopted from the Liangping Social Welfare Institute (where Lily Mei is from) sent money to OCDF for an air-conditioner for the orphanage. We raised $550!!! Isn't that wonderful! Not only will that buy the AC unit, but also formula and bottles and many other things that the babies in Lily Mei's orphanage will need.
3. Do you know a family that is adopting? First, pray for them every day. Right now, especially for China families, the wait is long...very very long...and it is so easy to get discouraged. Drop them a card in the mail. Give them a call, not to ask 'how much longer', but to say 'I'm here if you need to talk'. Donate to their "adoption fund". It is a very scary thing to find out two days before you travel that you are about $8000 short on funds. I have read so many amazing stories of people recieving monetary gifts right in their time of need. How wonderful to help take the worry and stress off the adoptive family.
Finally, here is a documentary made by the brother of an China adoptee: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6765162226700286439&hl=en
I found this on one of my message boards and thought it worthy to share.
