I have started collecting squares for Miss Lily Mei's 100 Good Wishes Quilt. I received my first square and wish from Felicity in Florida on Friday! This is going to be fun. I know I am not going to have time to get the quilt finished before Lily Mei comes home (especially since I have no idea how to quilt), but I thought it would be nice to start collecting now. I am going to put all the wish cards and fabric scraps into a scrapbook so Lily Mei will know how many people were looking forward to her homecoming.
What is a "100 Good Wishes Quilt"? Well, to welcome and celebrate a new life, there is a tradition in the northern part of China to make a Bai Jia Bei, or 100 Good Wishes Quilt. It is a custom to invite friends and family to contribute a patch of cloth with a wish for the new baby. Part of the cloth goes into the quilt, and the other part will go into a memory book with the wish made for the baby. The quilt contains the prayers and good wishes from all the families and friends who contributed a piece of fabric. The quilt is then passed down from generation to generation.
Here's how to participate: Please send us one 8”x 8” or 10”x 10” square of fabric (100% cotton). Lily Mei’s room will be decorated in pink and cream, but any fabric that is special to you will be appreciated. Along with the fabric, please send a brief “good wish”, prayer, or anything else that you would like to share with Lily Mei on a note card or small piece of paper. You can email me and I will send you the address where you can mail the square and wish card. I am going to create a separate blog (look to the right side column) to show all the squares and wishes that we receive. Also, if you are collecting squares, please let me know your address in an email and I will send you one back.
